No. 45 - Cheap Dates
Seeing the dress rehearsal of play is nice idea for those on tight budgets. If you're lucky there will also be snacks...even if they are leftover cheese, fruit and crackers from the cast. AB and first stopped off at Yats (mmm...mmm...mmm) for some yummy nummy eats before heading to the Indiana Repertory Theatre to be two of maybe twenty to see Gem of the Ocean by playwright August Wilson before it opened. It was a pretty good condsidering I knew nothing about the play or playwright (sometimes I just like to go along for the ride).

Funny enough because I work about a block from the theatre I got to see a few of the cast members in street clothes. What a difference the make up makes.

Set in 1904 Pittsburgh, Gem of the Ocean begins Wilson's 10-play cycle depicting the black experience in America in the 20th century, one play for each decade. Gem was the ninth play in the cycle to be written. The cast was great. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. It did seem to be a little long, but we thought maybe because it was a dress rehearsal. The story focuses on an ancient spiritual healer named Aunt Ester, played by Phylicia Rashad, and her dealings with a young man (John Earl Jelks) in need of redemption.
